If you can lay concrete, you can install Flextrate!

We have all the material you need to create rubber sports floors, rubberized flooring for industry, equestrian lodging, horse trailer floors, running tracks, poured in place playground surfaces, splashpads, pool decks and patios. Detailed instructions are available on request.

Flextrate Surfacing is a blend of EPDM rubber granules and 100% solids polyurethane binder which can be designed to a wide range of shapes and thicknesses. The resulting seamless surface ensures against tripping while providing a non-slip cushioning substrate.

Recycled rubber granules and urethane binder are  mixed together for a base course using a standard concrete mixer and trowelled to the desired thickness. This layer is allowed to set, followed by a topcoat of your choice of colored EPDM rubber and binder.

Flextrate forms an attractive, flexible finish that will withstand years of weathering, impact and abrasion. Eleven color shades are available to choose from. Colors can be mixed to create attractive variations. Available materials are listed below.

(1) RECYCLED BLACK SBR  Granulated, recycled rubber from car tires, mixed with polyurethane binder and trowelled to create base layer.

(2) POLYURETHANE BINDER used to bind rubber granules together for the base and top coats. Polycoatings International supplies a single component, 100% MDI, moisture cured polyurethane binder formulated for  poured-in-place applications. Contains no volatile organic compounds.

(3) COLORED EPDM RUBBER mixed with polyurethane binder to create the colored top surface. Polycoatings International’s  EPDM exceeds the USTC & TBA requirements of 20% rubber hydrocarbon content. Customers will enjoy a softer feel, enhanced UV protection and a brighter appearance.

MATERIAL CALCULATION

When calculating the amount of material for a given job please remember that the top layer (colored EPDM rubber) should be at least 3/8" thick in order to maintain uv resistance and color quality.

(1)  To calculate the amount of rubber required for either the base layer or the top layer, multiply the square feet of the job area times the rubber multiplier to get the total weight in pounds. (rubber is packed in 55 lb. bags)

(2)  To calculate the amount of resin needed for each layer, multiply the square feet of the job times the resin multiplier to get the total weight in pounds. (resin is supplied in 43 lb. pails)

BASE LAYER THICKNESS FOR FALL AREAS IN PLAYGROUNDS

Here are the industry standards for base mat thickness relative to the height of playground equipment (fall height) as determined by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM F1292-99):

2 ft. Fall Height - 1" Base Layer
6 ft. Fall Height - 2.5" Base Layer
8 ft. Fall Height - 3.5" Base Layer
10 ft. Fall Height - 3.75" Base Layer

PREPARATION, MIXING & APPLICATION

  1. Equipment required - concrete mixer, trowels, screed board, water spray bottle, a scale that will handle at least 100 lbs., acetone or toluene for equipment clean-up (site speciific material - landscape fabric, shop vacuum, vibrating tamper).
  2. Concrete surfaces must be clean, dry and free of oily residues. Vacuum to remove dust.
  3. Bare earth or sand surfaces must be levelled, compacted and covered with landscape fabric.
  4. <>To determine the right amount of resin binder for each batch of rubber, multiply the weight of the rubber times .25 (example: one bag of rubber weighs 55 lbs. X .25 = 13.75 lbs. of resin binder.
  5. Place the rubber in the mixer FIRST, turn on mixer and add resin SECOND. Mix slowly for at least three minutes. If humidity is low, mist the mixture lightly with water using a spray bottle. This will accelerate the resin cure, however, be carefull not to use too much water or the resulting chemical reaction will cause the batch to swell after trowelling, cauing an uneven surface profile.
  6. Pour mixture in place, screed and trowel to desired thickness and use force to compact granules to a level profile.
  7. Clean tools and mixer with acetone or toluene solvent.
